Urgent appeal for cat carers
Peterborough Cat Rescue has issued an urgent appeal for foster volunteers as the city faces an overwhelming surge in abandoned cats. In 2024 alone, the charity rehomed 935 cats — all without a dedicated centre, relying solely on a network of volunteers and foster homes. Founder Daphne Wilson warns the situation is becoming unmanageable, especially during kitten season, and says “Peterborough is awash with cats.”
The charity is seeking compassionate individuals who can offer temporary homes. All costs are covered — all that’s needed is a safe space and a little time.

Peterborough Cat Rescue has spoken out about the growing strain caused by an increase in unneutered cats and the rising cost of living. With the city’s cat population expanding, the charity is now only able to respond to emergencies. Foster coordinator Jo Underwood, who has cared for over 600 cats, highlighted the urgent need for fosterers and the pressure volunteers face. The charity also urged potential adopters to apply only if fully committed, after a wave of last-minute dropouts wasted valuable time and resources.
